See light and color through the lens of ancient forms.
Color, light, and form are such dynamic parts of the visuals of Greece. They can be seen in ancient built structures as well as in its land and water. These three important components also have impact on the local culture— the historic, agricultural, and the living of life. Experience a climate of light and form, observing water, stone and structure as we wander off the beaten path, witnessing ancient architectural forms, unique villages and mythological and symbolic imagery...sketching along the way. We will experience rather than simply witness the beauty of Greece. This workshop is designed to facilitate discoveries for participants of all levels and all disciplines (drawing, painting, collage, photography, writing...other).
This Destination Learning Opportunity includes introductions to aspects of Greek culture and history, as well as time to explore these through your own creativity. Group activities include museum and site visits, food tasting, lectures, demonstrations and salons. While demonstrations will be with drawing tools, they, as well as salon discussions and daily prompts will incorporate topics of creativity, discovery and inspiration, thus making this creative experience adaptable to several art forms (sketching, writing, poetry, music, photography, etc.) |

Our journey begins in ATHENS (5 nights) with a Welcome Meal and orientation. You will meet our Greek support staff, receive a Transport Pass and get ready for adventure! Our time in Athens is weighted with exposure to historical sites and topics. We reference this as we visit the Acropolis and Parthenon, Acropolis Museum, Museum of Cycladic Art, Panathenaic Stadium and the brand new Olympic Museum. We will also have a walking tour of one area. We aim for information and inspiration along the way. Creative exercises will prepare us for opportunities to experience Greece more deeply, and to work on site. We WILL have a full day for sketching on site when we take a coach to Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon. We will ferry to two islands, the order of which depends upon the ferry schedule at that time. Either way, you are in for a treat. I see SANTORINI (3 nights) as our moment of glory, walking among iconic imagery of Greece. It is unique. We will look at how light falls on white, explore the color BLUE, and examine the diversity of blues found out and about. We will visit the active dig of Minoan civilization at Akrotiri, with time to work creatively and visit the near-by red sand beach. Perhaps best of all, we will enjoy a sunset meal. |
Ahhh, TINOS (5 nights). This is where we can really breathe and dig deep into creativity. We have the chance to experience Greece more intimately. We will be right by the sea on this hidden gem. The island is not so well known to westerners, but is a place of pilgrimage for Greeks. We will settle into several days of capturing color, light and form in our sketchbooks. Our day in Pyrgos includes a tour at the Marble Crafts Museum where you may even get to try your hand at carving a line! The village itself will feed your visual and textural senses and we’ll have time for demos and creative work. We have been invited to spend a day of creativity at a “place of miracles” which includes a private Greek Orthodox chapel and celebration site high above the sea. The story behind this is wonderful and the views are spectacular. We will visit a Tinian home built in 1825, with class and drawing time, writing and exploring in and about the home's garden. Our stay in RAFINI (1 night) enables our return to the mainland and shuttle to the Athens airport. Hotels will be authentic Greek establishments rather than Americanized accommodations. |
