Door County Peninsula via Great Lakes Memorial Marina, Menominee, MI
Packing List
Luggage. Pack as minimally as possible in duffel bags, gym bags, back packs or similar soft luggage, NOT hard luggage. Storage is at a premium while on board.
Shoes. No dark soled shoes allowed. Tennis shoes, boat/dock shoes, sandals (closed-toe preferable, to avoid tripping), or natural gum rubber soles are acceptable. Bring two pairs in case one gets wet. Leather-soled shoes are slippery and not safe on wet decks. Rain Gear. We sail rain or shine. Pack to keep dry and comfortable in rain. A poncho is generally not enough. (A full rain suit with pants is the other extreme.) A hat with a bill will help keep rain out of your face. Plastic bags, worn between your shoes and socks can help keep feet dry. Clothing. Plan to layer. Temperatures on the lake can range from the 40’s to the 90’s. You may go from long-sleeve shirt, fleece and pants to swim suit. Bring a change of clothes in case you get wet. Possible items to bring: jacket, fleece, turtle neck, sweatshirt, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, shorts, T-shirt, swimsuit, underwear, long underwear, socks, hats (for sun protection and for warmth), sleeping attire (see Sleeping Arrangements). Please pack light. Gloves. Gloves provide warmth as well as protection when working with lines. Sailing gloves, bicycle gloves or old leather gloves with the fingers cut off are good. Gloves are not necessary, but can be nice. Toiletries. Showers are available at the marina. Otherwise, a lake-water sponge bath or swim will do the trick. Possible items to bring: small towel, wash cloth, biodegradable soap and shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, razor, brush, comb, medications. Sleeping - Bedding + Attire. The V-berth sleeps two and the main cabin sleeps four. The accommodations are semi-private, so sleep in items you don’t mind being seen in. Running shorts and T-shirts are common. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow. Sleeping pads are not necessary unless you plan to sleep outside in the cockpit. Store sleeping bags in stuff-sacks. Earplugs are useful. Hats. Pack a stocking cap that covers your ears in case of cold and a cap with a bill to keep the sun off your face and eyes. Miscellaneous. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, chapstick, refillable water bottle, camera. If you wear glasses, packing an extra pair is good. Croakies for glasses are a good idea. The boat has one life preserver (Personal Floatation Device) for each person. Pack medications and motion sickness remedies as needed. Meclizine, Bonnine, Ginger, Scopolamine, Dramamine or Sea Bands work for some people. Packing Check List

Basic Art Supply List
Basics Provided for your use during the Sea Scapes Retreat include: pocket palette of professional watercolors, water dish, sponge, paper towels, tray, small towel, student brushes, student grade paper 9 x 12”, file folder. Light-weight stools and adjustable easels are also available for your use.
REQUIRED Personal Supplies. Each participant must have their own sketchbook and pencil. Bring what YOU like. Some of my favorites are: Sketchbook. Beta Wire Sketchbook 270G has a spiral spine, easy to keep open. It has paper of substantial weight and easily accepts pencil AND watercolor. For this trip, no larger than 10 x 12”. The Beta 7 x 10 AND the square version can be fun. Pencil. For plein air work, I like Pentel Express .5mm mechanical pencil and extra HB lead, so I can draw at will without needing a sharpener. Optional Personal Upgrades
The basic supplies provided plus the required sketchbook and pencil will give you plenty to work with. Some upgrades are:
Paper. Your sketchbook and the paper provided may be ample. However, once you get “warmed up”, you may be more excited by your results on better paper. For your on-site work, a cost-effective upgrade is Fluid WC EZ Block. It comes in many sizes. 8 x 8”, 6 x 12” and more. For the Sea Scapes Retreat, I suggest going no larger than 12 x 18”. There are many options (Senelier, Italia, Arches, Fabriano, others.) Also fun is a pack of Plein Air Watercolor Board, 8 x 10. It is very stiff and an interesting surface. For this adventure, loose sheet paper is not recommended. Pens. Combining pen and watercolor can be beautiful. Favorite pens include: Carbon Ink Black fountain pen with cartridge and Kuretake Fudepen #14. The Carbon pen enables very delicate line work and is waterproof. The more bold Fudepen bleeds slightly when dampened, but in an appealing way. Brushes. The brushes provided are student grade. You may bring additional brushes. Recommendations for this plein air work include: Black Velvet Voyage #8 (or anything in the Black Velvet Series, Voyage or not) and the Neptune Synthetic Squirrel Mottler 1”. (Yes, one inch!) Isabey is another favorite brand. Water-Soluble Drawing. There are many great water-soluble drawing materials. CC Graphite Aquarell 4B is a water-soluble graphite pencil. You can sketch with it and pass a wet brush over it to create a beautiful piece. Viarco Art Graf Tailor Coins are a fun tool, as are watercolor pencils. Personal media. Watercolor and creating artwork from a boat are an ideal combination! However, you might have another favorite. This might include: collage, the written word, crayons, colored pencils, conte, etc. Please bring any non-solvent-based media you like. Journal. If your creativity is more journalistic than visual, bring your writing tools! Art Supply Check List
